Families are making their own dinner plans Thursday evening. The resort does have a restaurant and there’s more options just a few minutes away in Two Harbors from fast food to fancy, take your pick!

We hope to gather again later for a campfire and some casual stargazing on the back lawn, depending on weather, smoke, and where everyone lands after dinner, but the night is yours!
- Nice weather: main hotel campfire area is the planned meeting place.
- Rain/smoke plan: gather at Katie’s townhouse instead.
Prep: Wear comfy layers, bug protection, bring a camp chair or favorite blanket if you have one, and come and go as you’d like!

Friday daytime is all yours. Have coffee by the lake or in a nearby forested cafe. Ask your family to grab a meal or to go on adventure. Then explore or relax: bike, paddle, shop, golf, fish, hunt for agates, book a spa treatment, read, visit a local town, look for rocks, etc. If what sounds the most fun is just catching up with family, you’ll likely always find some company at Katie’s townhouse!

Request: Please make sure you are back in time for the family party at 5, and you might want to preview Saturday’s plans so you don’t double up on any stops (:

At approx. 7 pm we’ll be enjoying a family program!

Come ready for local pizza, betty’s pies, snacks, NA drinks, games/activities, photo albums and family treasures, a reunion slideshow, johnson family trivia, and a short family program.

You can also arrive in Two Harbors a little early to explore the waterfront, lighthouse, local shops, restaurants, beaches, and Lake Walk before joining us!

Please note: Liquor, Beer and wine are not permitted at the Community Center and Paige would really like her deposit back. Those interested may want to plan an early happy hour at Castle Danger Brewery or the like.

The morning is your chance to fuel up for the day ahead! Please give yourself plenty of time to grab coffee, get breakfast, pack lunch, or even literally get gas in your car. Got all that done and in need of company? You’ll probably find some Johnson’s hanging around the hotel or prepping at Katie’s.

Today is an adventure day! We’re headed up the shore together for waterfalls, lighthouse views, dramatic beaches, and a few choose-your-own-adventure options afterward.

Visit the plan below to see what you, personally, might want to plan for:

Pack up: layered clothing for sun, cool weather, or light rain, your day packs, phone/camera, sandwich/picnic lunch/good snacks, water bottles, comfortable walking shoes with a decent grip, sun screen, bug spray, any medications or mobility aids you might need, swimsuits/towels, your best family playlist, and whatever else you might need for a day of exploring! You might also want to have a change of dry clothing if you plan to splash around at all!

Note: Your lovely hosts can pair you with a cooler if you need a place to keep lunch cold! We can also answer any questions you might have, don’t be shy to ask!

From Black Beach, we encourage cars to continue exploring, based on their personal interests and energy levels! Those who don’t wish to continue exploring can head back to their lodging! Highway 61 is full of no shortage of scenic overlooks, waterfalls, lake superior views, and dreamy destinations. It’s the gateway to the Boundary waters, Gunflint Trail, Ely, Superior National Forest, and Grand Marais, and Beyond! The following list is selected based on it’s proximity to our current route while still getting you back to your lodging before you’re too tired to function.

Headed North:

• Stop by “Palisade Head” (3 miles north). A short steep driveway leads to tall cliffs overlooking Lake Superior for breathtaking views. Tip for kids and limited mobility: Stay close to the parking lot for safer views. Allow 20+ minutes. Free.
• Head to Tettagouche State Park (5 miles north) for more sights, nice park facilities, and short or long hiking opportunities. Those willing to hike may be rewarded with tall waterfalls! Allow 15+ minutes. May require State Parks pass for longer stays.
• Stop in nearby Silver Bay for treats or food!
• Stop by Crystal Cove (10 miles north of Black beach) for a lesser-known and picturesque beach tucked unto cliffs below the highway. A short but very steep hike is required.
• For those who desire some real lake swimming or fishing in warmer waters - Head towards Finland MN, Stop at the co-up for treats, and head towards an inland lake for fishing or swimming in warmer waters. You might enjoy stopping at nine-mile lake, harriet lake, hogback lake, and so on. Download maps ahead of time! And if you’re there before close, you can treat yourself to a drink or dinner at the Trestle Inn - a remote bar in the superior national forest that feels like a mirage. Allow 3+ hours from black beach. Longer for longer swims or additional stops.
• Guided “Hidden Gem” Hike with Kevin and Paige: Allow for 3+ hours for either a trip to Caribou Falls or the Upper Falls at Temperance River. More info below. Interest and ability dependent!

• Explore Beaver Bay’s Beaver River and Waterfalls or beach! Allow 5 minutes for a quick look, but easily a place you could spend all day! Free.
• Stop at Iona’s Beach on the way home (half way between Black Beach and Superior Shores). If you think you’ve seen all the beaches Superior has to offer? Nope! Iona’s beach is pebble beach unlike the others you’ve seen, and it’s only a short walk from the parking lot! Just don’t miss the parking lot! Allow 20 minutes for a quick view, but this is also easily a place you can spend much more time. Free.
• Return to the hotel for a well-earned nap
• Explore Two Harbors and the town beaches or local shops, restaurants, breweries, or museums.
• Stop at the Rustic Inn, go back for my more of Betty’s Pies, or Get a shake at the Malt Stand in town!
• Backtrack a bit to Duluth for slightly warmer swimming, the sandy park point beach, or exploring all that Duluth has to offer.

Each group is welcome to make dinner plans of your own: Eat along the route, head back to Two Harbors, or make plans with a smaller group. We recommend staying flexible and not counting on fitting large groups at local restaurants during prime time without a decent wait or reservation. As always, people are invited to use the townhouse kitchen to cook and hang out.

We plan to gather again at Superior Shores for family activities and a campfire. Weather permitting, final campfire time and or alternative location will be shared Saturday.

For those still at the resort we plan to gather for a casual family goodbye around hotel checkout time before everyone heads in different directions.
